From the greater New York metropolitan area, north to the Adirondack Mountains of New York State, and eastward to central Massachusetts, the Sisters of Mercy Regional Community of New York respond to today’s needs in many ways. We work in urban, suburban, and rural areas, and our apostolic works vary. Our ministries include education for all ages, healthcare, social services, child care, spiritual development, and parish ministry. Most of our ministries serve economically poor persons directly.

Addressing the impact of violence in our society is a good example of how our Sisters meet changing needs today through direct service and systemic change.

In 1995 we decided as a community to make non-violence education a priority, first among ourselves and then by extending this commitment into our ministries. As a result, Good Shepherd School in New York City developed a successful conflict resolution program for junior high school students. Mercy Center in the South Bronx organized a neighborhoodwide outreach program consisting of workshops that teach skills promoting non-violence. These included workshops for all age groups in the family. In addition, Mercy Center was one of several community groups that successfully organized to remove a nearby toxic incinerator.
