The Quality
of Mercy
The Walking Nun
Sr. Elizabeth McCarthy, RSM

It’s a very old Mercy tradition, the walking nun whose presence in the streets of Dublin was a sign of hope for young girls, the poor, and the homeless. Fortunately for the parishioners of Sacred Heart Church in downtown Mount Vernon, a Sister of Mercy is still walking the neighborhood, bringing hope to those on the lower rung of life.

As she makes her rounds, Sr. Elizabeth McCarthy is the spark that seems to light a thousand candles. She visits people and families in crisis; she conducts the parish RCIA program (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults); she’s in charge of the parish altar servers and the monthly youth Mass; she was instrumental in starting the successful parish summer camp for kids; and she organizes outings and social events for seniors, a group that now numbers about 100. But that’s not all Sr. Elizabeth does. In living her vows, she practices a spirit of humility that touches the heart of everyone honored to know her.
