Call to Action, a 20,000-member organization which supports married priests and the ordination of women, honored Sr. Theresa Kane, RSM with its Call to Action Award on November 5, 1999. The award has been given annually since 1981 to honor the person or organization whose work has contributed significantly to making an inclusive vision of the Church a reality.
"Sr. Theresa Kane was chosen because of her untiring work to raise awareness in the Church about women's issues," said CTA Co-Director Sheila Daley, "particularly in relationship to leadership and decisionmaking. Since 1999 is the 20th anniversary of her address to the Pope, the Call to Action Board thought that it was a particularly appropriate time to make this award."
In prepared remarks before an enthusiastic audience, Sr. Theresa said many men have come to realize that imperial, patriarchal, and sexist systems are dehumanizing to everyone, not just women. She congratulated Call to Action for serving as a model for a new church which is both community and sacrament.
In accepting the honor, Sr. Theresa acknowledged the protesting sisters who were present during her remarks to the Holy Father and have since worked valiantly in support of a larger role for women in the Church. She also thanked the many women leaders of the 20th century who have forged a radically new vision for women. "That vision," she said, "includes a conviction that we as women are made in the image of God. We are made into the very nature of God. Like Mary, we are convinced that nothing is impossible with God, and that with God, all things are possible!" |
